the scenario:
5-5 NL with a 200-500 buy in
BB with 10-10 (forgot the suits)
all limp, button (tight aggressive player and really knows what he's doing) raises to $30.
SB folds, I have about $650 in front of me so I call, button has just over 1000.
UTG, reraises to $70.
All fold, button calls. Button has a nice stack so I call.
Flop
10s-Qs-7s.
I don't want to bet yet because I want the button to make a move.
I check
UTG, all in for $150. I'm counting out my chips to make the call.
Button goes all in!!??!!
Now I have to think. I only brought 1 buy in with me and I went from $300 to $600 in about 45 mins.
I don't want to make a call if I think I'm beat.
So I'm putting the hand together preflop and post flop.
I put UTG on Aces with the ace of spades. Button, I didn't put him on As-Xs. He's not the type of player who would call an UTG raise with that kind of hand. And since I put UTG on As-A?, I knew the button didn't have it. Would he call an UTG reraise with Ks-Js? NO WAY!. If he did have the flush, why push all in if he flopped the nuts?? A smooth call would have got me in...MAYBE.
If he had K-K, he would reraise it preflop and try to isolate. He called a UTG reraise preflop so I was 100% sure he had a decent pocket pair and since he went all in, I put him on Q-Q to try to protect his hand against a flush draw. I even apologised to the table and said I flopped my set so I have to think about it.
It took me a full 2 minutes to make my decision but I decided to fold the cards face up. Everyone at the table said I was crazy to make that fold and I should go back to limit poker where the ladies play. Cards were not turned face up until the end of the hand. UTG shows A-A with the ace of spades. Board paired 7's on the river. Button shows Q-Q. The whole table looked at me in shock and 1 player, who I have been playing with for a few years, said "that was the most brilliant fold ever! I could never fold that in a million years!"
Button asked me if he smooth called the 150, would I call?
I told him maybe not. It would look to suspicious. But with a set of queens, smooth calling is a dangerous move with 3 spades out.
